The Race of Gentlemen
There are loud engine noises coming off what looks like a cast-iron bathtub on wheels. It’s a 1934 Ford Hot Rod heading towards the beach in Wildwood, New Jersey. Meanwhile, the rules of the race are being announced to the spectators and riders from a lifeguard tower. In order to participate in “The Race of Gentlemen” (aka TROG), many have come from far and wide, bringing their pre-1935 American cars. Salt, gasoline, and adrenaline are in the air shortly before eleven o’clock on the Pendine Sands beach in South Wales. It’s June 24, 2017, the start of the fourth two-day race put on by the Vintage Hot Rod Association. The sea knew well enough to take precautions and give the speed fanatics plenty of room as the hot rods, mostly American classic cars of the 1930s and 40s, lined up at the starting line.
